Bike and Scooter Registration and Guidelines to Keep Our Bulldogs Safe

A student is securing a bicycle at a bike rack under a covered shelter on a sunny day.

At Mississippi State, we’re committed to keeping all Bulldogs safe — on foot and on wheels. As your student begins a new academic year, we want to share important reminders about the use of scooters, bikes and other personal transportation devices such as skateboards and one-wheels. These devices are subject to guidelines outlined in University Policy OP 95.501.

Register Your Bike or Scooter

  • All bikes or scooters must be registered.
  • Cost for an annual permit is $10.
  • Students can get their permit sticker in-person at the Office of Transportation (Roberts Building, 412 Lee Blvd.) starting Monday, August 4.
  • Registration stickers must be clearly visible on bikes or scooters.

Don’t Ride on Sidewalks or Plazas

  • Students must walk scooters, bikes and other personal transportation devices, except those used for persons with disabilities, in areas where pedestrians are present.
  • This includes all sidewalks, plazas and other pedestrian areas.

Walk Through Crosswalks

  • Crosswalks are only for pedestrians and persons using a mobility device because of a disability.
  • Students should dismount and walk bikes, scooters or other personal transportation devices through crosswalks.
  • At crosswalks associated with a bike path, they should stop at the roadway and proceed through the bike path crosswalk when it’s their turn.

Use Bike Lanes or the Roadway

  • Riders should only use bike lanes within the roadway, travel lanes marked for shared use with vehicles or multi-use paths marked for bike use.
  • When in doubt, students should be in the roadway, behaving as a vehicle.

Keep Bikes and Scooters Out of Campus Buildings

  • Bikes, scooters or other personal transportation devices should not be brought into campus buildings.
  • Only mobility devices used by persons with disabilities are permitted in campus buildings.

Don’t Charge Indoors

  • Don't charge bikes, scooters or personal transportation devices inside campus buildings.
  • Coming this fall, students will be able to charge electric bikes and scooters at designated charging locations around campus, including residence halls.

Park Only in Bike Racks

  • Students should always park bikes or scooters upright and in designated bike racks and dismount zones provided around campus.
  • Bikes or scooters should not be parked in or next to campus buildings and doors, on handicap ramps or propped up on trees or light poles.
  • Riders should always secure their parked bikes and scooters with a lock.

Stay Safe and Avoid Fines

We are increasing enforcement of these guidelines to keep your student and others safe. Several serious accidents with injuries have occurred where bikers or scooter riders have improperly operated these devices, including instances where pedestrians have been hit by riders.

Your student’s safety is our No. 1 priority. We appreciate your partnership in reminding them to be considerate of all those moving around campus and helping keep campus safe for everyone.

And as always, Hail State!
